Why Your AC Freezes Up on a 95-Degree Day

It sounds like a contradiction: the hottest day of an Augusta summer, and your air conditioner's refrigerant lines are wrapped in ice. But frozen coils are one of the most common mid-summer failures we repair across the CSRA — and they never fix themselves permanently.

What Causes the Ice

Your indoor coil gets cold because refrigerant absorbs heat inside it. Two problems push that cold below the freezing point:

• Restricted airflow — a pollen-clogged filter, closed vents or a dying blower motor means not enough warm air crosses the coil, so its temperature plunges below freezing and condensation turns to ice.
• Low refrigerant — a leak drops system pressure, which drops coil temperature the same way. Ice forms at the coldest point and spreads.

What to Do Right Now

Turn the system to OFF and set the fan to ON to thaw the coil — this takes a few hours. Do not chip at the ice; you'll bend the coil fins. Replace the filter while you wait. If the system cools briefly and then ices up again, you have a leak or an airflow problem that needs a technician.
