Augusta's Yellow Season: How Pine Pollen Wrecks Your AC

Every March and April, the CSRA turns yellow. Pine pollen coats cars on Washington Road, puddles on the Savannah River, and every porch in Columbia County — and it's doing the same thing to your air conditioner's filter and outdoor coil.

What Pollen Actually Does to Your System

Your return filter is the first casualty. A filter that would normally last 60 to 90 days can load up completely in three to four weeks during peak pollen. A clogged filter chokes airflow, which makes the system run longer, drives your Georgia Power bill up, and can ice over the indoor coil entirely.

The outdoor unit suffers too. Pollen mixes with humidity and forms a sticky film on the condenser coil, insulating it and forcing the compressor to work harder to reject heat. Left alone for a few seasons, that film hardens and starts costing real efficiency.

Your Pollen-Season Checklist

• Check the filter every two weeks from mid-March through April — change it when it looks yellow-gray, not on a fixed schedule.
• Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a garden hose from the inside out (power off first), or have it cleaned in a spring tune-up.
• Keep return vents clear of furniture so the system can breathe with the extra load.
• Consider a higher-MERV filter if anyone in the house has allergies — but ask us first, since some systems can't handle the added restriction.
